John is a counsellor/psychotherapist and certified mindful self-compassion teacher. He was initially trained as a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction(MBSR) teacher and then subsequently trained as a fully accredited Mindful Self Compassion(MSC) teacher. For many years he has practised as a clinical social worker registered with Medicare. He has been a mental health professional for around 40 years and has a strong personal commitment to mindfulness and compassion-focused approaches.

John has taught 1000's of people in MSC, MBSR and/ or MBCT 8 week programs, Buddhist Shamatha meditation programs or residential and ‘urban’ retreats. He was trained in MBSR by the founders of that program, Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli. He has been trained in the clinical version, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, at Monash University.

In 2015, John became one of the first accredited Mindful Self-Compassion teachers in Australia. John was trained directly by the founders of this program, Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer in the first presented Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher Training program in 2014.
